Build Your Datacenter Like You Build an Application

Software teams learned how to build, version, ship, and roll back applications. Infrastructure should gain the same operational discipline.

DevSecOps changed the way software moves. Modern software factories build an application, test it, scan it, package it into an image, and promote that artifact through a controlled delivery pipeline. Containers and immutable images made that model practical at enormous scale, and they made rollback and repeatability part of normal operations.

Infrastructure has rarely had the same lifecycle. A platform often becomes a collection of installed packages, configuration files, scripts, appliances, point products, and one-off procedures spread across many systems. Updating it can mean changing the running environment piece by piece, which adds operational risk and makes large-scale consistency harder.

STRATUM applies the application delivery model to the datacenter platform itself. STRATUM is delivered as an OCI container image, so releases can be versioned, distributed through registries, staged before a maintenance window, and rolled back by returning to a known-good image. OCI layers also mean an update can distribute only the changed content rather than retransmitting an entire platform image every time.

The larger idea is the one I keep coming back to: build your datacenter like you build a container. Treat the infrastructure platform as a versioned software artifact. Export and restore the datacenter model. Move releases through a controlled pipeline. Keep the operating model consistent whether the environment is in one lab, across datacenters, in cloud infrastructure, at the edge, on ships, or anywhere else bandwidth and operational simplicity matter.
